Gone are the days of freedom of speech. Now days, everything you do is watched. They listen to our phone calls, for national security. They record our conversations, for quality control purposes. They track our browsing history, for internet marketing and your gps location from a cell phone for your safety. How do you like this automated red light cameras; that snap a picture of your license plate for going an inch pass the crosswalk. Craigslist crumbled to the media and Big Brother is out of control.

Craigslist agreed to shut down its erotic services category in response to large scale criticism from law enforcements agencies nationwide. Following the April 14th, 2009, murder and armed robbery, of a massage therapist, Julissa Brisman, who advertised on the list.

Although, this is in unfortunate incident. It isn’t isolated. Woman of all cultures, social class and moral ethics are violated and murdered every day in the United States. Lured somewhere by someone who means to do them harm. Craigslist is not the only erotic service classified on the net. But it is the biggest and most recognized. Many of the ads weren’t offers for sexual favors, at all. The media transformed many ads for massage and companionship into dirty exerts. They were grossly taken out of context and used to provoke public outrage.

In Nov, 2008, Craigslist started charging $5 to $10, depending on the market, for erotic services and required you to use a credit card for payment. They required this information to aid law enforcement agencies in tracking workers. This was a very scary transition for most adult industry workers; already suffering from the declining economy, stigma and prejudice. How did this protect adult workers from the Craigslist killer? If I supply you information about myself but visit a unanimous client, How exactly is that protecting me? It isn’t. It just another way for law enforcement agencies to harass and arrest anyone associated with this industry.

I’ve been in operation for 4 years and have utilized the Craigslist Erotic Services category on a regular basis. I used the classified for listing my ladies for legal services. I pay taxes on my income earned and purchased goods; just like any other “Moral” American.

In New Orleans, operating an escort service is a legal and legitimate business. There hasn’t been anything remotely like the April 14th, 2009 incident to accrue. The NOPD (New Orleans Police Department) are always, supposedly, conducting sting operation to arrest pimps, underage, illegal, slave sex traffickers and drug dealers using an escort service or the industry as a cover. Many times they only end up arresting an escort for providing a completely legal service, companionship or a massage. Most cases are dismissed for lack of evidence, in a court of law.

For the agency owners that operate legitimate business nationwide, this is a slip in the face of our freedom of speech amendment rights. How can one isolated incident shut down a medium used by millions of consumers? I see this as just a cover for the real issue. Policing workers in the adult industry. Be it as it may, Craigslist closing its erotic services listing isn’t going to stop the adult industry or it’s workers. They will adapt or list on any other the 1000’s of free internet classifieds all across the nation. It isn’t going to stop crime or murder. Someone was robbed or murdered in America the very same day. What about those cases? What about those victims? I guess they are as important as a massage therapist trying to earn a living. It’s just an excuse for more policing, I wish someone else will admit it!
